Lights in Darkness

Lights in Darkness is Kyle’s ongoing photographic exploration of what happens when light stops behaving itself.

Christmas lights, illuminated gardens, neon signs, shop windows, fairground displays and the visual clutter of the everyday become something entirely different when the camera is set in motion and the shutter stays open. Words stretch, colours collide, signs dissolve and familiar images unravel into trails, smears and unexpected shapes.

There is something wonderfully disorientating about it — a world where everything is turned up to eleven. Light becomes colour becomes movement becomes almost abstract.

For Kyle, the project also explores the particular intensity of navigating a world saturated with light, colour, information and words. What might look straightforward to one person can become an overwhelming visual jumble to another. Lights in Darkness plays with that sensory overload rather than trying to tidy it away.

The camera becomes a kind of visual mixer: turn it, drag it, leave the shutter open and see what happens. A Christmas tree becomes a galaxy. A shop sign becomes a streak of colour. Words lose their literal meaning and become shapes and gestures.

Part photography, part experiment and part happy accident, Lights in Darkness is an exploration of the light spectrum — and what happens when you let the light run wild.
